Re_Proprioception
Winter 2022

Exhibition at
“De Fabriek”
Proprioception:
/ˌprə(ʊ)prɪəˈsɛpʃn/

noun physiology
  1. perception or awareness of the position and movement of the body. "exercises to improve balance and proprioception”.

I wanted to try and look at humans in the same way we look at animals. By changing the way in which we move through space I tried to change the instincts we have towards human beings while re-discovering what proprioception means to us.

Re-proprioception is a performative tool/method which allows you to look at human behaviour from a (literal) different point of view using theatrical “performances” By manipulating and playing with scale, perspective, time-delay and sound, this VR-experience tries to change the way our senses work and how they influence the way we move in 3-dimensional space. Furthermore, the traditional relation of performer and audience is challenged by turning the audience members into performers themselves.

A live version of the performance was presented at the moonshots exhibtion in De Fabriek in Eindhoven.

In the video above I try to convey the feeling that I want to evoke in the performance itsself. Besides that, it’s also functions as a view into my sketchbook as it consists of a collection of sketches, experiments, and 2 different performances in public I did while working on this project.

I made use of a 360 degree camera to litterally change our perspective. Putting the camera in a high place and livestreaming the footage into a VR headset makes it possible for you to look at yourself and your surroundings from a birdseye perspective. This makes you and the humans around you look as small as ants which creates a vivid out-of-body experience.

As the technology is still very new and in development there’s still quite some hiccups in the process.

Below you can find the full video of my presentation at De Fabriek

and a couple of my earlier experiments. Some of which work best if you view them through a VR headset.
